History
The Proton Effect began informally in 2006 to support the Jackie Jennings Appeal.

The Jackie Jennings Appeal
Jackie Jennings underwent surgery in 2004 to remove a rare Grade 1 Chondrosarcoma tumour from her head. Not all of the cancer was removed and she had a further tumour growing. Regrettably, treatments in the UK are ineffective. However, effective treatment was found in Boston, USA.

That treatment was Proton Beam Therapy, a cure, with a 95-98% success rate.

The Jackie Jennings Appeal was begun in mid-2006, formed by friends and family to send Jackie to Boston for treatment. Wyre Forest Primary Care Trust (PCT) was eventually able to lodge £75,000 with the hospital in Boston and negotiate further associated costs, but funds were still needed for Jackie’s travel, accommodation and general living expenses. Jackie began to receive Proton Beam Therapy at the end of 2006 and was in Boston for almost 8 weeks, returning home in February 2007. Twelve months later, Jackie is happy and healthy.

The Proton Effect took its name from the treatment that Jackie was due to receive, and is proud to be associated with the successful Jackie Jennings Appeal. With Jackie’s support and approval we have set up The Proton Effect Charity to help other cancer sufferers in our area that can’t get all the funding they need from our local PCT.
